Here's my first book review on my blog, and boy have I got a good one. This book, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, has been going around our department for a little while and finally, I decided to join in. Normally, a high school drama turned vampire story would not catch my interest, and that's why I didn't even try to read it until now. That being said, this book may be tied with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when it comes to how fast I read it - I couldn't put it down. It took me fifteen minutes to try to unload the dishwasher before I just gave up and continued reading. This book surprised me. I was expecting typical high school drama, the popular kids vs. the average that-could-have-been-me kid, with cheesy vampire scenes that were meant to scare but really didn't thrown in. Instead, I discovered one of the very few books I felt the need to reread as soon as I finished. This is a book that completely overtakes your very existence - it's all you see, think, and hear until you are finished and forced to put it down. At least, that's how it was for me.
What really makes this book good is that the characters are realistic. I could see myself in Bella, the protagonist. She thought the way I did, noticing and finding humor in details others tend to overlook. Our sense of humor was the same, and I'm not going to lie, that's a big plus for a character. :-) Edward, in my opinion, is exactly the type of guy almost every girl wants to meet in high school. He's mysterious enough that you can't stop thinking about him, he's dangerous (gotta get that bad-boy phase out of the way early), but at the same time he's the person you would feel the most secure around. While reading this, my high school experience began to pale in comparison, and I couldn't help wishing that I could go back and do it all over again (I know, not many people can say that) and this time, I would want there to be vampires (even less people can say that).
It's hard for me to go into much more detail without giving away anything, so if you've read the book and care to discuss it (or tell me why you don't like it) I would be more than happy to hear it. I am using all of my willpower to wait until Dec. 1 to run out and buy the second book in the series (since I'm twenty-something in the holds line) because I want to finish NaNoWriMo first. However, you can bet that as soon as Dec. 1 rolls around, if I can wait that long and if that hold hasn't come in, I'll be at the bookstore.

Amy, I'm so glad you've decided to jump on the Twilight bandwagon! Anytime you want to talk vampires, come find me! I've read the first book, gosh, it was at least a year ago, and it's still up there with my "most fun" reads of all time. I'm trying to wait till after the mock elections to read the others. I have to admit that I really had to restrain myself from buying the 2nd title when I was browsing a bookstore the other day...
