Big, Fun, Scary Adventure Challenge

Now that NaNoWriMo's over, I didn't think I'd be looking at that site for another year or so. However, today I got an email telling me about "The Year of Doing Big, Fun, Scary Things Together," and I took the bait and asked what it was all about. It turns out, the same people who motivated you through NaNoWriMo are also willing to motivate you to reach your goals in 2008! All you do is make a list of the things you want to accomplish within the next year and, if you complete them, you'll get a certificate to remind you of just how much you can accomplish when you put your mind to it!

It's so easy to do; if you have a NaNoWriMo account, just go to the Forums page, then the "December and Beyond" section, and then the appropriate link. Then just post your list of things you want to accomplish in the next year, and keep checking back for encouragement and ideas on how to accomplish your goals! If you don't have an account, just sign up!

P.S. I've kinda thought of the idea of New Years resolutions (which this essentially is) as kind of hokey, but I'm going to be honest, I've learned a few things about myself. 1. I'm a procrastinator (actually, I've known that for a long time). 2. I don't tend to do things for myself unless someone else is holding me accountable. So, while I think resolutions are things nobody ever does, I'm hoping that by creating a list and airing it out for the world to see, I'll feel a little more motivated and accountable for my actions.

P.P.S. I just realized that maybe it would motivate others, or at least give them ideas of things to accomplish, if I used my own as examples. Plus, it's adding to that accountability thing. So here goes (don't judge me on these!).
1. I want to post 15 times a month on this blog to keep it current and a way to learn and share.
2. Participate in NaNoWriMo again.
3. Lose 5 pounds by my wedding date (loosely translated means lose 5 pounds of fat and gain some muscle).
4. Exercise at least 3 times per week, every week, for the whole year (except my honeymoon week). If I do number 4, number 3 shouldn't be too hard.
5. Read one classic novel I've been neglecting (still haven't decided which one - suggestions?).

Alright, that's it. I just wanted to share and invite you all to do the same!

  1. I must say, I love your changing avatars!

Best of luck with your goals. When is your wedding date?

I would recommend "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand. (Or lots of staff have chosen "Pride & Prejudice" as a fave. I've never read it - but tons of librarians can't be wrong!)

  2. Thanks, Sara!

We're getting married in Gatlinburg, TN on May 24th, and then having a reception here in town on the 31st.

I think I tried reading "The Fountainhead" a few years back and never got into it - but I do like Ayn Rand. Maybe it's time to try it again; you know, one of those "you have to read it at the right time" kind of books. Oh, and you can add me to the list of people who like "Pride and Prejudice." :-)

  3. Have you decided on your honeymoon destination yet?

OK - my goal - eliminate sugar, specifically all refined sugars. I'll get to the white flour later.

Someone suggested Madame Bovary. You may have already read it. I couldn't get into it at all.

  4. Nope, haven't decided yet. And haven't read Madame Bovary. I should try it, though, because I liked Moll Flanders when you didn't. :-)
